Professional Appearance Does Matter

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

With today’s economy we find that there are many people who are unemployed.  I know this comes of no surprise to you.    Many major corporations are downsizing, consolidating and finding ways to become more efficient with less people.  These factors make the job market very competitive.  Those who are job seekers or looking to advance in their current roles must make sure that they are doing everything they can to have a competitive edge.

When most people think of being competitive, they think in terms of education, skills and ability.  Don’t get me wrong, all of these things are important but your image is just as important.

I have recently read several articles related to employers hiring people who look good.  I don’t mean having a supermodel look but I do mean those who look like they care about their appearance.  A recent Career Builder survey indicates that 41% of employers state that the people who dress better or more professionally tend to be promoted more often than others in their organization.

Financial services industries tend to place alot of emphasis on professional dress. While the organization overall may have a more casual dress code, how you dress can have an impact on how others perceive you.    Dressing professionally can project a motivated and dedicated image.

You do not have to go out and purchase a new wardrobe but you should have a few few basic versatile pieces;  look neat and clean; dress as if you are going to work and not a ball game;  and try looking the part for the role you want.  It is often said that you should not dress for the job that you currently have but for the job you want.

Don’t let your appearance keep you from reaching your potential.

Is this something that you are struggling with?  I would love to show you how to be comfortable while remaining professional in order to help you land the job of your dreams.

Don’t let your image hold you back from opportunities.

Will your jeans work at work?

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

Today I went back to school shopping with my son.  While in the mall I took advantage of the time to check out all the different styles of jeans that are on display for the fall season.  I say for the fall because with our over 100 degree days not many people are trying to wear jeans right now, at least not in Fort Worth, Texas.

As I looked at the styles on the mannequins, I noticed that some would be very work appropriate while others, not so much.  With that in mind, here are 3 things to consider when selecting  jeans for work.

1. The Wash-  a dark rinse is polished enough for most settings

2. The Fit-body skimming, but not too tight, looks pulled together

3. The Style-the office isn’t the place to rock your trendier pairs of jeans.  Stick to classic jeans without embellishments.

For a good pair of jeans that look very nice for the workplace, try a pair of trouser jeans. They are my favorite!

Are You Presenting a Polished Image?

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

You know it is said that when you look good you become a people magnet.  Studies have shown that people are drawn to an aesthetically pleasing appearance.  I’m not saying that you have to be drop dead gorgeous but you do need to package yourself attractively.

If you take the time to groom yourself and wear flattering clothing that fits your body and is appropriate for the occasion, you are demonstrating that you care about your appearance and have confidence in yourself.  Others will also have confidence in you, unless you give them reason not to.

On the flip side, if you look thrown together or have on clothes that do not fit or are outdated then you are communicating that you don’t care about your appearance, you are out of touch or even that you have low self esteem.  Others will respond to you in like manner.

I know it isn’t fair but it is reality.  Think about the goal that you are trying to accomplish.  Is it to get the job that you have been seeking, to be taken seriously as a contender for a promotion or to get that committee chair position that you have hoped for?   Whatever the goal is for you, dress yourself appropriately to meet that goal.  A polished image is a powerful tool to have in your handy tool bag.  Don’t leave home without it.

How to look stylish in the “cool” workplace

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Yesterday I walked into my office and it felt as if I had stepped into a freezer.  It may have been 95 degrees outside but it was definitely around 60 degrees inside.   Of course I didn’t have a sweater or wrap to put on, so I had to shiver the day away.  This little episode made begin to think, in terms of fashion, what is a stylish way to deal with the air conditioning at work?

There are probably many of us who work in offices where the air conditioner is turned up to freezing during the summer months or at least it feels that way.  So, how can we look fashionable when we walk in from the heat and need to throw something on to stay deal with the cold inside temperature?

Jackets really don’t look good this time of the year unless it is a lighweight summer jacket.  A cute cardigan or shrug is the perfect item to have.  You can get one in a neutral color like black, grey or cream and just keep it at the office.   A shrug or cardigan is light enough where you won’t look out of place but it still serves the purpose of keeping you warm.

This is one of my favorites from New York and Company.  They have several  cute styles and most importantly, they are affordable.

Tips for Looking Good at Work

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

Today many work environments are becoming less Business Casual and moving more towards the Casual side.  Even in a casual environment we still want to maintain our stylish and professional look. Every now and then we need a reminder of what is appropriate for work and need to pay attention to what we wear.  I always remind people that it only takes 7 seconds to make a first impression and most impressions as based on how you present yourself.  Here are 5 tips for Professional Dress.

1. Use neutral colors as the framework for your outfit. These colors are black, gray, brown, beige, taupe, and cream. Then add a piece that is in your color palette. For example pair a gray slacks with eggplant (purple) shell, button-up, scarf or tie. The gray is the foundation and is refined, while the color will add creative interest while making you look more energized and interesting.

2. Make sure your clothes fit appropriately. In a professional environment you want to be careful not to “overexpose” yourself. Showing cleavage is never appropriate. This can easily be fixed with a camisole under any shirt. Your skirt length should be no shorter than 2 inches from your knee.

3. Accessorize with caution and class. Your accessories should be used to enhance your visual presence, not distract from your message. Chandelier earrings, multiple bangle bracelets and any accessories that swing or make noise while you move can all be major distractions. Keep your jewelry simple and clean. Limit yourself to three pieces or less. Use scarves to attract attention to your face. Use classy, simple hair accessories to secure hair in place and keep it off your face.

4. Look at the whole picture. When people meet you, they look at you from head to toe. No piece goes unnoticed, so if you are carrying a worn out bag or have scratched up shoes, they will notice. Details such as having your nails groomed and cleaned is just as important. If you have a fabulous outfit on, but your hair looks like a mess, then you’ve ruined the picture!

5. Mix it up. Wearing the same pants with the same blouse or jacket can be really boring.  Today’s there are so many other options that don’t include matchy-matchy pieces. Try pairing a tailored blazer with a high-waisted pencil skirt or blouse. Pair a nice skirt with a silk, flowy blouse. By mixing different materials you get a little bit different feel out of the outfit. For more casual looks you can jazz up some dark denim jeans with a boyfriend jacket layered over a fitted t-shirt (must be high quality) and add a fun, but appropriate necklace. Men can opt for high quality t-shirt with a blazer over it – it looks simple, yet sophisticated!
